Blogger #9 - Vincent Chen - Period 8 - 10/8/21

AIM: HOW DID EDGAR ALLAN POE’S EXPERIENCES AND KNOWLEDGE OF HISTORY INFLUENCE HIS CREATION FOR MANY OF HIS STORIES?

The class started off today’s lesson by discussing the answer to the following “do now” question:

  1. Using your cell phones define the following terms:

A) Pestilence (N):

A usually contagious or infectious fatal epidemic disease, especially bubonic plague.

B) Plague (N):

A highly infectious, usually fatal, or contagious bacterial epidemic disease; characterized by fever or delirium; it infects many and kills most.

  1.  Team Challenge: With your teams, List at least two plagues or pestilences that have affected our society, as well as the characteristics these possess that fit the definition of pestilence and/or plague.

Our team came up with yellow fever, bubonic plague, and Tuberculosis.

Next the class read the “PANDEMIC REVIEW”

We later analyzed pictures of terrible pandemics in history. The Spanish flu pandemic stood out to us as we are currently going through something similar. Both in the picture and us are wearing masks. Pandemics are not something new, rather it is something that repeats itself and shows itself throughout history.

We later read and analyzed an historical context on the bubonic plague.

It was discussed that the bubonic plague back then was a very deadly disease, one that once you caught it you are almost guaranteed mortality.

EDGAR ALLAN POE: BIOGRAPHY

One of the pictures one the slides was that of the grave of Edgar Allan Poe, taken by one of our teachers.

The class discussed how Edgar Allan Poe married his 13 year old cousin, how put into perspective it would seem out of the norm for us. However it was common back then.

TEAM COLLABORATION EXPLAIN ANY OBSTACLES THIS WRITER FACED

Our team discussed that being orphaned may have left Poe with feelings of resentment towards his parents for leaving him behind. Rejection by John Allan made him feel even more resentment as he was also rejected by his foster family. Drinking, gambling, and poverty left him alone and defeated.

Next we read WHY IS EDGAR ALLAN POE CONSIDERED TO BE INFLUENTIAL and  FIVE (5) CHARACTERISTICS OF THIS AUTHOR

Then we started reading, annotating, and analyzing “THE MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH”

By Edgar Allan Poe

We finished up the class by annotating the first paragraph of the short story.

HOMEWORK

Research the symbolic meaning of the number “7”. List, in bullet form, the multiple symbolic meanings of the number “7”! Be prepared to discuss tuesday.

Reflection:

What did I learn? Today I learned that the work of Edgar Allan Poe was heavily influenced by his life and personality. Because of the hardships he went through, his works reflected what he felt. I realized that because hardships happen that Poe would wrought what he wrought, how his works would influence society and future writers, making a huge impact on the horror genre. I also learned that pandemics occurred throughout history and that the newest one was not really “new”. People suffered from illnesses throughout history and the one we are living through is very similar to the ones that came before. Learn from history and try to fix the mistakes in the future.

Why did I learn it? I learned about such topics today to understand why Edgar Allan Poe wrote such stories. I also learned the topics to relate that to what is happening right now in the present world, where Covid is still making an impact on life.

How will I use what I learned? I will use what I learned today and keep in mind as we go further into the works of Edgar Allan Poe. I will ask myself why did the author choose how to write the way it is. I will keep in mind the syntax and diction usage of Edgar Allan Poe and how it is related to what he felt and endured. It will help understand more in depth of the text I read, relating it back to the author.
