AIM: How does a writer’s use of clues aid in the reader’s ability to draw conclusions?

Topic: “Masque of the Red Death” Pre-lesson Clues

Think/Pair/Share

  1. The Think/Pair/Share was for each team to talk about their favorite type of mystery whether that be a movie, tv show, or novel. My favorite mystery was Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie. Illaria stated that her favorite mystery was “And Then There Were None” and she especially liked the confession at the end where there was a major plot twist of how a dead character was indeed the murderer. Charity also stated that his favorite mystery was the Maze Runner and how they found out the mysterious organization that locked them in the maze.

Clue: a piece of evidence or information used in the detection of a crime or solving of a mystery.

First Discussion

The class discussed an example activity that included 2 clues that led to an ultimate conclusion. One clue was that a group of boys were walking into a dirty field and the second was that they were carrying bats, hardballs, and gloves. The class came to the conclusion that the boys were going to the field to play a sport and inferred that the sport was baseball.

Second Discussion

The second activity incorporated 4 pieces of data where in each piece the class was supposed to use the information to deduce the conclusion. The first piece of data was a man that was wearing a mask, had a gun in his pocket and walked into a bank. Elizabeth inferred that the man walked there to rob the bank. The second piece was a fisherman that felt a powerful tug on his line and saw a bass about 20 feet from shore. The conclusion was that the man caught a powerful fish. Next was a man who was with a loving woman and reached for a ring in his pocket. Ilaria inferred that he was about to propose to the woman. The last one was about a child who had developed a fever and itchy bumps while chicken pox was spread throughout the neighborhood. I inferred that the child had been infected with chickenpox.

Third Discussion

The next activity was where each team had to create a conclusion and make 3 or more clues to go along with it. Then each team would have a turn of sharing their clues and see if another team could figure out their conclusion. Our clues were that a certain woman worked at Staten Island Tech, is our favorite teacher, and appoints class bloggers. Our conclusion was Mrs. Peterson. Each team was able to have their conclusions guessed so each team earned points.

Conclusion: The Final Discussion was a question that stated: Why is the ability to identify clues essential to enhancing comprehension in all facets of literature and life? In simple terms this is asking what identifying clues and reading in between the lines can help you with in your everyday life. I stated that it can help you figure out when family members or friends are hiding their emotions which can allow you to help them talk about what’s going on with them in their lives.
