Blogger #11 - Ethan Hayutt - Period 8 - 10/14/2021

Aim: Why is it significant that the “black” room is being positioned at the west end of the castellated abbey?

As a class, we discussed the do now. We went over the directions of how the Sun would move. Symbolism: The use of specific objects or images to represent abstract ideas. For example, a sunny day can symbolize happiness and freedom. A symbol MUST be something that is touchable and/or visible to the eye. A symbol is something that you can hold in your hand or draw a picture of.

<3 = Love

Dove = Peace

The ideas being symbolized are ideas and cannot be seen or touched. The symbol takes its place as the visible.

Allegory:

  • A narrative (story)

  • Act as an extended metaphor.

    • Example of metaphor: I got lost in the oceans of his eyes.

  • Story has 2 meanings.

    • Literal

    • Figurative

Symbolism vs. Allegory:

  • Allegory is a complete narrative(story).

  • Symbolism is smaller and the meaning can change.

We then continued to read the Masque of the Red Death. As a class, we decided we preferred Ms. Peterson read us the story.

Each of the rooms in the masquerade were unique and peculiar in their own ways. Specifically, they would be different colors and have different colored windows.

  • We discussed the correlation between this question and the do now, as the rooms are organized from east to west, as the sun rises and sets.

There is no light in the rooms. Therefore they are kept lit by candles outside of the window. The window is located in the middle of the wall.

The significance of the direction of the windows in the rooms is to represent the sun moving from east to west. This may symbolize the idea of life, death and rebirth.

The effect that the light produced upon the revelers and the masquerade ball in the first 6 rooms was that it added a strange look with the reflection of the light. It looks even ghostly.

The light in the 7th room differs from that of the first 6 rooms because it is horrifying and symbolizes the red death in a sense with the blood red color.

The clock is placed in the black chamber, at the most western end of the abbey, because it is a reminder of death and that it is coming. The clock ticks to remind them that they are getting closer and closer to death with every second.

Every hour the clock reminds people that time is constantly moving and is used to scare them. This even slows them down, when it should motivate them.

Reflection:

Today we discussed symbolism and found some examples of symbolism used in the Masque of the Red Death. This is useful for fully understanding texts and stories, as with symbolism very much can be learned the deeper you look into it. An example is the 7th room that doesn’t have the same light as the other rooms. It symbolizes the red death and fear of death(which is why it was empty). I will definitely be keeping these ideas in mind for future reading because it will teach me plenty more about what I am reading, and definitely adding a whole new meaning.
