ABANDONED PRE-LESSON
Do now:Define the term “Civilization”
(Definition of Civilization - https://www.dictionary.com/browse/civilization)
Civilization: a human society having an advanced stage of development in the arts, and sciences, and social, political, and cultural complexity.
The class began with a discussion about what it means to be a civilization. My partner and I concluded that a civilization is where a lot of people live together and unified people of all cultures to come together to form a new religion. Furthermore, in a civilization, advancements may occur which lead to increases in areas such as population as well as improvements in creations and inventions.
Team Activity:
Directions - Have a member from your team read the simulation aloud for clarity, while the others follow along. Answer the following questions (as a group) based on this simulation.
(Simulation - https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Duo71cmGwz4Jll1kS74RHRtNn-k0H6Pj/edit)
The simulation describes a situation in which you and a group of your classmates become stranded after an incident. In the incident, it states that while going on a trip for spring break the plane gets hijacked. While the crew attempts to subdue the hijackers’ all the passengers get killed in the battle, except for the pilot and the rest of the passengers who were on the floor of the plane during the battle. The plane crashes just off the shore of an island and you and your friends swim to the shore. When you all get to the shore you realize that the island is uninhabited, no one knows where you are, you have nothing with you, and that you might remain on the island for a long time, possibly even forever.
We first read the simulation together in our group and then answered the questions that are as follows.
List the things in your present life that you will miss the most. Why?
- Friends and family: These are people who we love, so of course they would be missed.
- Food: The good food in the city, and not needing to hunt for food.
- Convenience: no more shopping or just buying what you need.
- WIFI/internet connection: no more phones or electronics/no more calling/texting/playing on the devices.
Try to decide whether the possession(s) of some of these things would mark you as a civilized person. Explain
- Not necessarily as so-called “uncivilized” people still have food and friends and family. But the internet connection aspect does make one a more civilized person as it is a technological innovation that connects people from all over the world.
What are some of the long-range plans that you would have to implement to create a new life for yourself and the others on the island? Why?
- Learning how to build (shelters)
- Learning how to catch and get food (gather/hunt)
How would your group handle the inevitable personality clashes that would occur?
- Our group would try to figure things out since we are all on the same boat now. We think that it’d be hard to say how we will handle personality clashes as we are not in the situation and we won’t know how we will be until we are in that moment.
What would be the biggest problem(s) you would face? Why?
- The biggest problem would be trying to learn how to supply our basic needs like freshwater, food, shelter, etc.
How would you make decisions?
- We would make decisions that would most benefit us, like sharing an equal amount of food /resources amongst all of us.
How would you determine rules/laws? And what would be your process when rules/laws are broken?
- We would determine rules/laws by discussing together and deciding on the rules/laws (direct democracy) if one person breaks the law they will have to do extra labor like gathering food for everyone. If that person does not want to do extra labor we can send them off to explore the ocean and see if they can find food or societies near us and if they make it alive they can report it to us.
Can you think of anything historical that would dictate/determine the order in which things should occur?
- Something historical that I could think of that would dictate/determine the order in which things should occur is when a new empire/civilization is built, and the rulers are trying to form the basic structure of how the empire is governed.
Background on William Golding:
(Definition of allegory - https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/allegory)
Allegory: the expression by means of symbolic fictional figures and actions of truths or generalizations about human existence.
Lord of the Flies is often referred to as an allegory of human evil. This is because Golding wrote the book based on his own personal experiences as he set out to "express grief at what was behind the human face." Throughout the story, he drew parallels between the book and the problems of today which include gangs and lack of respect for leadership figures.
Conclusion:
Aim: How do we view ourselves in relation to our society? I.e: How do we view civilization?
As we concluded the lesson for today we referred back to the aim and had a class discussion.
The class shared their thoughts about the question which was that we are a part of society and try our best to make it a better society. Although some people would disagree with some decisions, we can’t do much about it other than doing our part in society, which is going to school and gaining knowledge to better improve society in the future. Personally, my take on the aim is one that is similar to my fellow classmates. As said by my classmates, everyone does their best to fulfill the role that they play in society. However since we’re still young there aren’t many things that we can truly do to help our society. Of course, there are the little things we can do such as helping others that we see are in need of help and taking care of our environment. But we can’t truly do anything without some kind of position or power over others in society. Civilization is one that can be quite harsh, at times terrible things are done in our society by terrible people. However, in a civilized society of course everything won’t be sunshine and rainbows and terrible tragedies may happen that we cannot put a stop to.
Reflection:
What did I learn?
Why did I learn it?
How will I use what I learned?
Throughout today’s lesson I learned about what it means to be a civilization. A civilization is one that is built from the ground up and becomes advanced through their developments. Civilizations may also be cruel at times and will have conflicts amongst their people. Along with learning about civilizations I also learned a new term which is the term “Allegory.” An allegory is the expression by means of symbolic fictional figures and actions of truths or generalizations about human existence. Lord of the Flies is an example of an allegory as it is an allegory of human evil. I learned this because it will help us understand Lord of the Flies deeper as we begin to read the book. Based on today’s lesson I can infer that there will be situations that portray human evil throughout the book. I will use what I learned to better understand the book as well as our own human society. By learning about what it means to be a civilization as well as trying to create one of our own I can have a deeper understanding of both the book and the society that I live in.
