Why do you believe so many people enjoy a mystery, or mysteries?
Many people enjoy mysteries because they enjoy the thrill of going along with the characters and trying to solve the mystery from the clues that are presented. The suspense and challenge of the story allows the audience to be entertained without it being overbearing. People enjoy trying to solve the mystery before the ultimate ending is revealed. In many ways it makes them feel like a part of the story.
MURDER MYSTERY
Task: Solve the mystery from the clues presented. The winning team(s) can earn up to 100 points from guessing the murderer correctly.
Group Answer
Our group believed that the murderer would be the elevator operator. The murder weapon was the knife because he was stabbed near his chest and a knife was found right outside Miss Smith’s office. The time of the murder occurred between 12:10 a.m. to 12:25 a.m. because the last time he was seen by someone was around 12:10 a.m. and when his body was found, it was beleived that he had died 2 hours prior. The place of the murder would be the elevator. Lastly, the motive of the elevator operator would be the fact that he needed money because he was a known gambler.
Other groups’ answers:
Mr. Scott killed Mr. Jones because he needed money and he was a struggling actor. He stabbed Mr. Scott with the knife.
Most other groups had the same answer as our group but certain factors such as the time and place of murder were different.

Full story
Mr. Jones was shot by Mr. Brown after their confrontation about Mr. Brown embezzling money. That explains the blood in Mr. Brown’s apartment. The elevator operator after seeing Mr. Jones limping and carrying a briefcase filled with money decides to rob him. He kills Mr. Jones either right out Mr. Scott’s apartment or in the elevator with a knife. Then he hid his body inside the janitor’s closet which he has access to because he is an employee.
Reflection
Today we solved a murder mystery as way to help learn how to draw conclusions from the clues presented. The murder mystery presents us with clues to help us ultimately draw our own conclusions to what happened to Mr. Jones. We were the detectives using all the clues given to us about the setting, characters, etc. Without these clues we would've not been able to solve the mystery itself. Overall, it was a fun lesson that demonstrated the importance of the usage of clues to help draw conclusions.
