Blog #43 -Suyee Htun -Period 2 -5/25/20

Aim: How does the setting of the novel contribute to the mood and tone of 1984?

Do Now:

Consider your knowledge of Oceania thus far. What words, which provide “tone” might you use to describe Oceania (create a list)?

  • Oppressive

  • Fake

  • Synthetic

  • Control

What is TONE & MOOD? How do they differ?

Tone - About the speaker (doesn’t have to be the author)

Mood- how the reader feels

How would you compare Winston’s tone to the reader’s mood?

  • While Winston’s tone is more about him being observant and being wary of everything around him or being like a “detective”, we as the reader also are being observant but we want to learn more about the world he lives in.

How does his tone compare to the rest of Oceania?

  • The rest of Oceania seems to blindly follow anything that is told to them opposed to Winston observing what is going around him and him being more aware of how Big Brother is influencing other people.

What is SETTING?

The world according to 1984

Setting: The time, place, physical details and circumstances in which a story occurs and includes the background, atmosphere, or environment in which characters live and move and usu. (usually) include physical characteristics of the surroundings.

Why is SETTING important? How does it contribute to the meaning of the work as a whole?

  • Setting is an important story element that essentially “sets up” the scene. It helps give the reader a clue to what is going on in that story’s world and why events in the story play out how they do.

Palimpsest - a manuscript or piece of writing material on which the original writing has been effaced to make room for later writing but of which traces remain.

Write about your thoughts regarding the reading.

  • In my opinion while some of the events can be a bit hard to process since many things in the story can have symbolism, but so far, the world of Oceania is an interesting concept. Although the story is a bit dark, it is interesting how we easily believe whatever is given to us and how we have to learn to question because some people don’t naturally have the instinct to question what we learn from others.

What is it like working from home?

  • Working from home is honestly very much a struggle as I am sure it is for other people. Being able to do work within a window of a few days opposed to the 40 minute window we have at school is both a blessing and a curse because I am able to do work when it is better for me. However, sometimes I tend to leave work off and everything starts to pile up, so right now is where the real time management begins in my opinion.

Your own personal feelings and thoughts about what is happening right now.

  • In my opinion, I really like staying at home as an introvert. I don’t mind not going outside because most of my interests involve me staying indoors. Despite this, I do miss the classroom and my friends and I hope everything gets resolved quickly and peacefully so that we can get back to school.

Reflection

  • During this lesson, I learned about how everything is being set up for us readers. The setting set up the mood and influenced how we understand the events in the story. I also understood the text more deeply and got some insight to why the author included things in his story. Since this lesson is essentially elaborating how everything is being set up, I will have to keep everything from this lesson in mind while reading. This will help me understand events in the story and what is going on in Oceania when I read further into the book and encounter more events that require a deep understanding of the story.
