Blog #43 -Suyee Htun -Period 2 -5/25/20

Aim: How does the setting of the novel contribute to the mood and tone of 1984?

Do Now:

Consider your knowledge of Oceania thus far. What words, which provide “tone” might you use to describe Oceania (create a list)?

  • Oppressive

  • Fake

  • Synthetic

  • Control

What is TONE & MOOD? How do they differ?

Tone - About the speaker (doesn’t have to be the author)

Mood- how the reader feels

How would you compare Winston’s tone to the reader’s mood?

  • While Winston’s tone is more about him being observant and being wary of everything around him or being like a “detective”, we as the reader also are being observant but we want to learn more about the world he lives in.

How does his tone compare to the rest of Oceania?

  • The rest of Oceania seems to blindly follow anything that is told to them opposed to Winston observing what is going around him and him being more aware of how Big Brother is influencing other people.

What is SETTING?

The world according to 1984

Setting: The time, place, physical details and circumstances in which a story occurs and includes the background, atmosphere, or environment in which characters live and move and usu. (usually) include physical characteristics of the surroundings.

Why is SETTING important? How does it contribute to the meaning of the work as a whole?

  • Setting is an important story element that essentially “sets up” the scene. It helps give the reader a clue to what is going on in that story’s world and why events in the story play out how they do.

Palimpsest - a manuscript or piece of writing material on which the original writing has been effaced to make room for later writing but of which traces remain.

Write about your thoughts regarding the reading.

  • In my opinion while some of the events can be a bit hard to process since many things in the story can have symbolism, but so far, the world of Oceania is an interesting concept. Although the story is a bit dark, it is interesting how we easily believe whatever is given to us and how we have to learn to question because some people don’t naturally have the instinct to question what we learn from others.

What is it like working from home?

  • Working from home is honestly very much a struggle as I am sure it is for other people. Being able to do work within a window of a few days opposed to the 40 minute window we have at school is both a blessing and a curse because I am able to do work when it is better for me. However, sometimes I tend to leave work off and everything starts to pile up, so right now is where the real time management begins in my opinion.

Your own personal feelings and thoughts about what is happening right now.

  • In my opinion, I really like staying at home as an introvert. I don’t mind not going outside because most of my interests involve me staying indoors. Despite this, I do miss the classroom and my friends and I hope everything gets resolved quickly and peacefully so that we can get back to school.

Reflection

  • During this lesson, I learned about how everything is being set up for us readers. The setting set up the mood and influenced how we understand the events in the story. I also understood the text more deeply and got some insight to why the author included things in his story. Since this lesson is essentially elaborating how everything is being set up, I will have to keep everything from this lesson in mind while reading. This will help me understand events in the story and what is going on in Oceania when I read further into the book and encounter more events that require a deep understanding of the story.

Aim: How does the setting of the novel contribute to the mood and tone of 1984?

Do now: Consider your knowledge of Oceania thus far. What words, which provide “tone” might you use to describe Oceania (create a list)? Explain your word choices.
❖ dark → the writer constantly describes Oceania as a colorless and dreary place
❖ mysterious → the writer often leaves the reader with unanswered questions
❖ critical → the writer establishes a feeling of caution and carefulness

Mood vs. Tone

Class Discussion:
How would you compare Winston’s tone to the reader’s mood?
Early on in the book, Winston establishes a tone of paranoia and fright. Throughout the story, Winston is constantly worried about being caught “thinking” or doing something that will end up in a punishment. Similarly, the mood the author creates also contains a negative connotation. The reader feels the heaviness and the tenseness of the plot just like Winston feels as he is experiencing the story unravel.

How does his tone compare to the rest of Oceania?
Winston's tone is very different from the rest of Oceania. While Winston is constantly worrying about his actions and thoughts, the rest of Oceania does not seem to care. Most of these people have been brainwashed by the government and ultimately do not seem to express the paranoia that Winston constantly feels throughout the book.

Setting- Is the time, place, physical details and circumstances in which a story occurs. They include the background, atmosphere, or environment in which characters live and move, and usually include physical characteristics of the surroundings.

Why is setting important?
Setting establishes the place in which a story takes place. Besides this, the setting helps create the mood/tone of the story because the characters’ surroundings influence the atmosphere in which a book is written. Overall, the setting is the framework for a story. No setting=no story! How does it contribute to the meaning of the work as a whole? Where a story takes place ultimately influences the effectiveness of how the story is being told. For example, if you are telling a story that aims to establish pity for a character that broke his/her foot, a setting at an orphanage vs. a setting at a friends house successfully adds to the sense of pity the author is trying to create. Due to this, the setting contributes to the message of the work as a whole.

Palimpsest- a manuscript or piece of writing material on which the original writing has been effaced to make room for later writing but of which traces remain.

How does palimpsest impact the past (history) and how does the government benefit in the future due to its implementation?
The ability to control and change the past allows for the government to manipulate its citizens into believing what the leaders (in this case, Big Brother) want to believe. This ends up benefiting the government in the future because it is a way for these leaders to censor information without getting caught by citizens.
“The Eleventh Edition is the definitive edition, he said.” “We’re getting the language into its final shape—the shape it’s going to have when nobody speaks anything else. When we’ve finished with it, people like you will have to learn it all over again. You think, I dare say, that our chief job is inventing new words. But not a bit of it! We’re destroying words—scores of them, hundreds of them, every day. We’re cutting the language down to the bone. The Eleventh Edition won’t contain a single word that will become obsolete before the year 2050.”
He bit hungrily into his bread and swallowed a couple of mouthfuls, then continued speaking, with a sort of pedant’s passion. His thin dark face had become animated, his eyes had lost their mocking expression and grown almost dreamy.
‘”It’s a beautiful thing, the destruction of words.”

Syme Discussion: What are your thoughts about him? What stands out? Literary Device(s) associated with him?
I felt that Syme is an odd character who is very naïve for someone who is so intelligent. He is completely brainwashed by everything that Big Brother says. For someone that is of his level of intelligence, you would expect for him to notice the corruption of the government he works for. Instead, once he becomes considered dangerous he will simply be vaporized and replaced by someone else. Syme symbolizes the bulk of the society that is clueless about the government’s manipulation.

The Dark-Haired Girl Discussion:
What are your thoughts about her?
When this character was first mentioned I thought the opposite of what Winston thought. Rather than her being a spy for the government, I thought she was someone like Winston who also noticed the corruption in the society she lives in. In fact, I think they will end up somehow discussing with each other the unfair brainwashing tactics of Big Brother.
How does Winston feel about her?
Winston is cautious when it comes to the dark-haired girl because he is afraid that she is a spy for the government. However, I feel that he is also attracted to her due to the fact that he always notices her and thinks about her.

Quarantine Questions:
Write about your thoughts regarding the reading.
Often when I hear people discussing the book 1984, there is a big negative connotation behind it. Most of my peers tend to strongly dislike my book. As an avid reader, I of course decided not to begin reading this book with a negative mindset. Turns out this was the correct decision. I personally love this book. It is not only extremely interesting and drawing, but it is also different from most of the other dystopian books I have read. There are so many unbelievable events in the text (ex. public executions, telescreen videos of graphic war events, etc.) that shock me and make me want to know what’s going to happen next. I am excited to continue reading and find out what is going to happen to Winston and all of the other characters.

What is it like working from home?
Working from home is not what I expected. One thing I am glad about is the fact that I am able to get much more sleep than I did when school was open. Additionally, I can more easily manage my time because I am always at home. Therefore, I can make an effective schedule for myself throughout the day depending on how much work I have. Unfortunately, this doesn’t mean that I am able to avoid procrastinating. Since I am at home, I periodically get distracted with activities that seem more compelling to spend time on. As a result, making a schedule is easy, but pursuing it is not. I think remote learning has been effective, however, because teachers are able to get in contact with students via zoom, email, etc. Through this, students are able to gain the knowledge they would’ve gotten during school, ask questions, and interact with teachers/each other. For some students, it might be difficult because for all our lives we have been used to attending a constantly interactive environment associated with education. To add on, students might not have a great internet connection, thus not having the ability to grasp the main ideas of each virtual lesson. I have also been getting significantly more work than I would in school, however I have been learning to manage this work efficiently in order to avoid becoming overwhelmed. Overall, working from home has several pros and cons, but it isn’t ideal when compared to the educational environment we are used to as students. Therefore, I prefer attending school in person.

Your own personal feelings and thoughts about what is happening right now.
The current situation regarding COVID-19 is terrifying. People are panicking and I myself am worried, especially since my family has been directly affected by the virus. One of my grandparents, who was in a nursing home when the virus began to spread, has passed away due to the virus and I am trying to be extra careful to not infect my other grandparent, who lives with me. The circumstances have been, and still are, very difficult to deal and cope with. What worries me the most is that New York cannot go back to the way it used to be before the virus for a very long time. A vaccine needs to be discovered very soon or else there will be a second wave. I find it shocking and crazy that a pandemic has dominated the world in 2020. Businesses are suffering, the streets are empty, and everyone wears a mask. After two months in quarantine, I am forgetting what it was like when no one wore masks and they were considered unnecessary. Personally, I just want the world to go back to normal and I want to return to school. Unfortunately, that might not happen for a long time. I am worried for my family and the people of the world because this pandemic is a very serious and deathly situation that everyone has to focus on preventing. Ultimately, the situation has shown me how thankful I should be for how blessed we all were for being able to perform daily activities without having to fear contracting a deadly virus. Hopefully we can all go back to the way things were sometime soon.

Reflection:
During the lesson, we discussed a lot about the mood and tone of the book that we are reading, 1984. These two elements are vital to any text that is being read because it establishes how the character, reader and author are feeling. In 1984, both the mood and tone were heavy due to the setting, a dystopian and corrupt society. This in turn ties into the importance of the setting of a story and how it relates to the mood/tone that is being created. On top of this, we also discussed the significance of various characters. This included Syme, an innocent brainwashed character whose intelligence will end in his vaporization. Despite Syme’s total dedication to Big Brother, his knowledge will end in his death due to the government’s want for control, further demonstrating how fraudulent the government really is. We also discussed the dark-haired girl’s significance. She seems to be constantly catching Winston’s attention, and although he thinks she is a spy, I think that she is going to end up in some sort of positive acquaintance with him. In other words, I think they have more in common in terms of thoughts than what is originally displayed. Overall, I can apply what I learned to all books that I plan on reading in the future. By analyzing the mood, tone and setting of future books, I may be able to uncover secret messages the author is trying to share. On top of this a lesson that I learned specifically from the characters was to not hide my thoughts and ideas. Not only are Winston’s secrets slowly eating away at his sanity, but being able to let out the ideas (through his diary) seems to be the only thing that is keeping him together. Fortunately for me, I live in a society that is lucky enough to have freedom of speech, press, etc. so I do not have to live in constant fear of my thoughts getting out.

Aim: How is the theme, "the importance of having knowledge about the past

First order of business : Housekeeping and reiteration of the expectations for remote learning.

Do Now - Think/Pair/Share
What are some of the “lies/stories” parents tell their children?
Why do you believe they tell these stories, rather than the truth?
What might be a history “lie/story” a school has taught/told you?

  • A common white lie our parents tell us is that carrots are good for our eyesight.
  • This lie is propagated because it benefits us, and accomplishes our parents’ agenda of keeping us eating healthily
  • Funnily enough, this lie was actually created by the British Wartime government to conceal the new classified radar technology
  • Another lie: don’t keep the light on in the back of the car
  • Yet another lie: Santa Claus and the Easter bunny. Reason for those lies: Incentivizes people to behave
  • COMMON THREAD linking the liars (even if they’re harmless) they have more knowledge than those being lied to
  • The actual history of the genocide of the Native Americans by european settlers is heavily sugarcoated when told to students, especially younger ones.
Big Takeaway, as paraphrased from Ms. Peterson : “The government can manipulate history very easily, especially to keep people happy and complacent.”

Group and Class Discussions:

“ 2 + 2 = 5 ” quote serves to exemplify the degree to which the Party controls thought, and the perception and understanding of truth itself.

The Pyramid/Hierarchy serves to illustrate how even a very small but powerful minority can hold tremendous influence over the vast majority

Because Winston is on his quest for the past, he questions his sanity. He looks to the past to give him solace about his sanity and to reassure him that things were at one time better.

Important Symbols: His ulcerative flare-ups indicate an act of rebellion, and the coral paperweight represents the shielded protection of being in a home, which he craves.

The Room, which has no telescreen, and which Winston keeps returning to, is a place the party and its intrusive tentacles have not yet reached and taken complete control of. It represents freedom in many ways.

“Hope lies in the Proles” because 1) they are much greater in number 2) since they are seen as less than human by the party, Big Brother would be least prepared to sustain an attack from that “front”. Additionally, Big Brother is so unweary of the proles that they don’t even spy on them (no telescreens)

Reflection :

Today’s lesson could be summed up as the truth about lying. It helped me better understand how some, particularly those in positions of power, serve to gain from propagating lies. In an age where fake-news is insidious as it is, this lesson is particularly important. Having knowledge about the past, studying history, and most importantly remembering the events of our own lives is incredibly important. In the immortal words of philosopher George Santayana “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” This lesson also showed how hope and change may arise from the unlikeliest of places, just as the proles have become a source of hope for Winston. In this day, where both formal media and social media are saturated with calls for change, sometimes it is important to know that perhaps the government isn’t the best place to look. This class not only has implications for the present and future, but for pieces of the past which we are already forgetting. One such example is the Katyn Woods massacre, where Soviets rounded up thousands of the Polish intelligentsia and slaughtered them in cold blood and in secret. Discussion of the educated elite was a part of today’s discussion, and it directly relates because it was discussed how those who possess knowledge are very dangerous to despots and authoritarians because they are powerful, and that is threatening to regimes. I will apply what I learned as I continue to read 1984, and it will aid in my understanding of the central struggle. Furthermore it will motivate me to preserve knowledge of the past, at least for myself.

1984 : Chapter 6-8 George Orwell. - ppt download
Do Now: THINK/PAIR/SHARE
Include the main/key ideas/details for each!
  1. What are some of the “lies/stories” parents tell their children? Some lies or stories that parents tell their children are that Santa, the tooth fairy and the easter bunny are real. Peter said that carrots help improve eyesight.
  2. Why do you believe they tell these stories, rather than the truth? Parents tell these stories to develop certain good habits and in some ways for health. Maya said that some stories that parents tell may be to ignite kids' imaginations and their creativity. As well as to make the kids happy and excited such as Santa.
  3. What might be a history “lie/story” a school has taught/told you? One history lie is that Columbus and the Indians were friendly. Another example is in elementary school we were taught that there were only 3 forms of matter most likely because young students would be very confused with the idea of plasma. These were told for the students benefit and easy understanding.

The First Thanksgiving
How was history manipulated in this story?
History was manipulated in this story to depict a happier relationship where everyone got along and there was no blood and death. They explain it in such a way to show that history can be very easily manipulated and be made to appeal to a certain group of individuals. Another reason this story was manipulated could be to show kids that people can form happy relationships with one another and rebellion or battle is not needed between different types of people.
Group Discussion
“In the end the Party would announce that two and two made five, and you would have to believe it.”
The 14 most important '1984' quotes by George Orwell in the age of ...
  • Analyze Winston’s statement above.  How do you explain his example? What are your thoughts on the matter? Winston’s statement recognizes that the citizens in society are very vulnerable, which is why they are so easily brainwashed. In this example he sees that the people of Oceania are easily manipulated to believe that 2 plus 2 is equal to 5. This shows that the party is able to control what people think and nobody has an independent opinion from the government.
  • What do you think the author’s intention or purpose is for the reader to have as a takeaway about the world you/we live in? George Orwell’s writing style and purpose for the reader is to question the world around us and we cannot always believe what people tell us. He proves how easy it is for people to be manipulated and how a small minority can have tremendous influence. We aren’t supposed to buy everything that is told to us but we should see things for ourselves and question why things are this way.

Group Work
  • Winston is clearly on a quest for the truth from the past. He states, “If there’s hope, it lies in the proles” (Winston, pg. 69).
  • If he is/isn’t correct explain how things would unfold for success or failure to occur.  Consider the government’s role in all of this as well.
  • Are there specific actions or events that need to occur to guarantee success/failure? If so, what?
Winston believes that hope remains in the people who are old and wise enough to avoid being brainwashed by the government. A requirement of success would be that a group of these individuals need to stand up and overcome the government’s corrupt system. Moreover, if this is not done, when the new generation comes and the thinkers die; there will be no hope in ensuring proper rebellion against the government. In the book, Winston mentions that people have to realize that there is an issue, but the people seem content with what they have. The only way is a rebellion and the decision remains for the people to realize the government is not working with an idea to replace it because without an idea there would be no point.

Whole Class Discussion
  • What do you make of Winston (unconsciously) finding himself back at the very junk shop where he bought the diary? This shows that Winston wants to find out about the past and evidence to prove that the past government was better. He sees the junk as a representation of the past and for him to go there is rebellious to some extent.
  • Why does he appear to be so drawn to the paperweight? The paperweight represents a safe place. He feels that everyone is watching him and he longs for a real relationship protected by “the glass.” Meaning he is looking for that safe haven or protection that he is very far from.
  • What are your opinions of the room, which has no telescreen? I think it was very interesting and how the telescreen is necessary for watching everyone. It is quite strange that the thought police has not done anything because every room is entitled to have a telescreen.
  • Why do you suppose he decides he will continue to return to the shop, despite the risks?  Foreshadowing? His decision to continue to return to the shop shows early signs of rebellious action. The room is a place where Big Brother cannot get to him and where he feels safe to continue his diary where nobody can watch him. This can foreshadow that there is a lot more to this room than the eye can see.
1984 Winston Antique Shop - cigaretsale-mvp

Reflection: Today in class I learned the idea that we should stand up for what we believe in and question the world around us. By this I mean that we should not trust everything we hear or believe what people say because as individuals we are easily susceptible to be manipulated. We are entitled to an independent opinion and have the right to voice our opinions when we feel something is wrong. In 1984, George Orwell portrays Winston to recognize the corruption in the government and to question the tyranny and rule of Brotherhood. However, at first Winston believes that what he is doing is very wrong and against the social order. The reason we are learning this today, is to step up when we feel that something is wrong or oppressive against the people even if you are the only one who sees it. Once the idea of change is brought to the spotlight, other people will start to realize similar ideas that you first saw. I can use what I learned to my everyday life and help people see the wrongs in certain things. We as citizens were given this right to voice our opinions if there is some type of warped system or problems arising, whereas Winston is being watched and in danger if he is caught showing rebellious actions. A quote to underline is, “our only hope is the Proles,” which is important because it illustrates the idea that only the ones greatly affected may see certain issues in rule that those who control cannot and possibly don’t even care. And the idea is that these are the people that in certain times need to step up and cause change.

To be honest working from home is not as bad as it first seemed. Time management has been easier for the most part because now classes start as early as 9 and some days I don’t even have to wake up early. This is very helpful and gives me time to focus on other things in my life other than school such as working out and other hobbies. The workload is just enough to keep me busy, meanwhile I still have time to relax and work in other ways. As of 5/29/20 there are about 200 thousand confirmed cases in New York City and 1.7 million people in the United States who are being treated for coronavirus. New York is staying strong and complying with the Governor’s commands to keep the city safe. In fact, the death count per day is around 50-60, whereas at the peak it would hit almost 800 deaths a day. At the moment, I am trying to make the best of what I have and focusing on achieving my goals whether it is in school or for swimming. Pools are closed but I have practice almost everyday and hope for the city to open up soon!

Aim: How does Odysseus establish his authority as an epic hero in the episode of
"The Challenge" and "Odysseus‘ Revenge?”

Do Now: TURN AND TALK
In  Ancient Greeks, revenge was viewed as a form of social justice.  They believed that if a horrid wrongdoing was done upon them, they had the right to return the favor; in whatever means they found just. The Greek values greatly resembled the Hammurabi Code of:  “An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth” mentality, meaning that whatever crime the perpetrator committed, the punishment brought upon him should be equal or fitting of the crime.

1. How does this compare to the way our society views revenge today?
2. How does it compare to the way that you view revenge?

The class answered this do now in a discussion, where the student speaking would choose another to continue the conversation. We answered it by speaking about how society typically views revenge as an unethical way to repay someone’s incorrect actions in today’s world. In Ancient Greek society, if someone does something to you, you could perform the same action back to them without great fear of repercussion This compares to the way that we, personally, view revenge because we view revenge as returning the favor. Revenge is considered a method of vengeance if someone acts poorly. This view of revenge is similar to how the ancient Greeks viewed it. However, this is not considered morally correct in our society and is typically viewed negatively.

Notes:

The class then proceeded to read “The Challenge” and “Odysseus’ Revenge” from “The Odyessy.” (Linked below for reference.)

Some important terms to know for this reading are:
implacable (adj): unrelenting, stubborn; impossible to calm or appease.
quiver  (n): a portable case for holding arrows
entrails  (n –pl): internal organs, the intestines; within

We completed these two readings by spirit reading, which means students read however much they want from the text one after the other without raising hands or being called on. After the completion of this text, we had a whole-class discussion based on the following prompt.

“But the man skilled in all ways of contending, satisfied by the great bow’s look and heft, like a musician, like a harper, when he draws with quiet hand upon his instrument he draws between his thumb and forefinger a sweet new string upon a peg; so effortlessly Odysseus in one motion strung the bow. Then slid his right hand down the cord and plucked it, so the taut gut vibrating hummed and sang a swallows note” (Homer 1370-1379).

1. What epic simile is created in the lines above, from “The Challenge”? Explain the comparison.
The class answered this question by expounding about how the epic simile is comparing Odysseus drawing his bow to a majestic musician playing his instrument. This suggests that he is very skillful in this craft as a musician is skillful in playing their instrument.

2. Which of Odysseus’ qualities are being highlighted here?
a. How is Homer presenting Odysseus to the audience?
The class discussed that Odysseus’ qualities of being skillful and glorious are presented in this excerpt because he is being compared to a musician. Odysseus is depicted as handling his bow similarly to how a musician handles his instrument. This shapes Odysseus as an epic hero and brings honor to his name because of how proficient he is in completing this valiant trade.

We then watched a few videos to further our understanding of the text. (Linked below for reference.)

Moreover, we analyzed two images that depict this portion of “The Odyessy.”

Analyze both paintings depicting Odysseus killing the suitors.  Do you believe the artists accurately depicted Odysseus’ attack on the suitors? Would you evaluate this to be a “fair” fight-- why or why not?
The class analyzed both the images and the text to conclude that the paintings are mostly accurate based on the story. Furthermore, we decided that this is considered a “fair” fight because Odysseus was stronger than all of the suitors, but he was also only one person against many.

Experience Working From Home:
Working from home is a much different experience from working in a classroom setting. It is more difficult to stay focused because home is thought of as a place for leisure. A classroom, on the other hand, is monitored and the focus is continuously on studying/completing assignments. Additionally, home contains many distractions, whereas school (or a workplace) is geared towards being a quiet place where tasks are to be completed. We also have more time to complete assignments at home, but the assignments are structured differently to accommodate for this new schedule. In remote English class, the tasks are similar to those that we had before the pandemic. However, class time is structured differently to maximize what we can complete and how we can communicate across the Zoom video-calling platform. Nevertheless, we are able to truly learn a great amount and further our education in our own separate homes.

Updates Around the World/Community Regarding the Virus:
As of today, May 28th, 2020, the death toll from the coronavirus has surpassed 100,000 in the United States, according to “The Washington Post.”  More than 40 million Americans have filed jobless claims in the last ten weeks. Therefore, it is not surprising that the economy is suffering. In an attempt to resolve this issue, New York City, one of the locations with the most coronavirus cases in the country, will begin reopening in June. However, the governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, says that businesses can deny entry to people that are not wearing masks. Moreover, the Boston Marathon was canceled for the first time in one-hundred and twenty-four years according to “USA Today.” The situation is clearly very dire and there is no way of telling when society will begin to perform under normal conditions again. Thus, the virus seems to be continuing severely, but to a lesser degree than it once was.

Personal Feelings and Thoughts About What is Happening Right Now:
In our current society, the coronavirus has taken over the news and is progressing horribly. People who are asymptomatic can still be carriers of the lethal virus. It is most dangerous, however, for older people and people with underlying health issues. In my opinion, this virus is very harmful and it is important for people to stay at home as much as possible to prevent contracting it. If going outside is needed, such as to get groceries, a mask should be worn and precautions should be taken. I believe that to clear this virus as soon as possible, people have to be careful and try to self-quarantine. Since several businesses are reopening to save the struggling economy, it is important that people continue to maintain distance from one another. At some point, however, I feel that businesses reopen because many are suffering due to unemployment. If this continues, many are left without essential resources. Hence, my personal feelings are that we must continue to be careful of this virus even if businesses reopen to rebuild our economic society.

Reflection:

Today in class, I learned about Odysseus in “The Challenge” and “Odysseus’ Revenge” from “The Odyessy.” I learned about the Ancient Greek custom of revenge and how it was justly used in their society. In this portion of the story, Penelope holds a challenge for her hand in marriage to see which of the suitors is able to successfully shoot a bow and arrow through twelve axhandle sockets. Odysseus, disguised as a beggar, successfully completes the challenge and reveals himself. This astonishes the suitors because they thought that Odysseus had died along his journey. Odysseus then attempts to get revenge on the suitors who were trying to seize his life that he had worked hard to build. He does this by killing all of the suitors with his bow and arrow and reclaiming his place in Ithaca. I learned this information in class today to further our understanding of the Odyessy and of Odysseus’ journey. His characteristics of valor and wisdom are apparent in these two excerpts. This shapes his role as an epic hero. Also, I learned about revenge in Ancient Greek culture and in current society by connecting it to the texts. I will use what I learned today to guide me towards the conclusion of the Odyessy and to enable me to understand the text as a whole. The vengeance that Odysseus depicts at this part of the story sheds light on how important it was to ‘return the favor’ in Greek culture. In essence, the information gathered from this class is crucial to my comprehension of Odysseus as an epic hero and how this journey has affected his character.
