RL 1 Spring What is Poetry Lesson

What does poetry mean to you?
For the Do Now we were asked to share our experiences with poems, good or bad, and what it means to us. Ayah responded first by saying that most of her experiences with poetry were good and that she loves reading it because it’s fun to decipher what people mean by their writing and it really flows. She then mentions that she likes writing it because it’s a good way to cope with your emotions. Moving on, Fiona agreed with Ayah that writing poetry is a good way to express your emotions but she has not had the best experience with poetry and she hopes to receive a better understanding of poetry through this lesson. Kevin also said that the way people express themselves through poetry is pretty cool but he personally doesn’t like it because it’s hard to understand. Mrs. Peterson shared that she hated it as a kid because it was frustrating to have to try and interpret what someone who is dead was thinking.
After discussing the Do Now we watched two videos on YouTube. The first one was a TedEd video about what makes a poem a poem. Some of the recognizable characteristics that poems have that are mentioned in the video are they emphasize language’s musical qualities, they contain condensed language, and they often feature intense feelings. The narrator also talks about the artistic aspect of poetry. The second video gave us a better understanding of a free verse poem. Free Verse- poetry without a fixed pattern of meter and rhyme. Some information that I obtained from the video is that free verse poetry has no rules when it comes to rhyming, syllable count, or number of lines, and they most likely contain figurative language.

Do ALL poems have to rhyme?
We read Walt Whitman, “Song of Myself, ” (Section 2) Leaves of Grass to get a better understanding of what he believes poetry is. We had to keep this in mind for our discussion later on.
ACTIVITY: As we read the following poem by Pablo Neruda, annotate and be sure to look for diction, imagery, figurative language, and any other additional literary elements that stand out to you!

We were asked to read and annotate the poem “Poetry” by Pablo Neruda. Through annotating we remember what we learned in prior lessons and get a deeper understanding of the writing in front of us.
How can we define poetry?

With your Teams, create a final definition of poetry. Using the table below, summarize how Whitman and Neruda define poetry along with how our class defines “poetry” according to today’s “Do Now.” Be sure to use textual examples in your summary!
For our group work we had to analyze both poems and make an inference about how the authors felt about poetry. We then discussed and shared what we wrote with the class. This is what my group came up with:
Overall we believe that both authors agree that poetry is felt by everyone differently and therefore it can mean different things to different people. It’s also a way to express emotions and it can be difficult to interpret the true meaning of poems.
Second lesson of the day
Aim: How can our knowledge and experience with poetry and poetic techniques ensure the successful creation of our Poem Anthology project?

How do you usually feel when you learn you are being assigned a new project? Why?
At the end of class, Mrs. Peterson explained what we will be doing for our project. Our goal by the end of it is how can our knowledge and experience with poetry or poetic techniques ensure the successful creation of our poem anthology project. The term anthology means a collection of works. We are going to create a collection of different poems. She asked us how we feel when we get assigned new projects. Ayah shared that she gets scared when she finds out that we’re being assigned a new project because it can be overwhelming having to keep up with everything. Fiona also said that it can be quite nerve racking and overwhelming having to think about multiple things. Chole added on by saying that she tends to like projects because she likes the creative freedom that comes with them. She’s also excited and curious to see what we’re going to do next. I personally agree with Ayah and Fiona that getting assigned a new project can be super stressful when it comes to managing it. Moreover, Mrs. Peterson explained that the type of learning we will be doing is called project based learning(PBL). We’re basically going to learn a lot throughout the next few weeks and then we’re going to combine all the components in the end.
Reflection:
To sum it up, the first lesson was necessary to teach me the beginnings of poetry and what it means. I also learned more about what makes a poem free verse. I was able to analyze two poems and interpret what the author's definition of poetry is. Having a better comprehension of what poetry means will help all of us with our upcoming project which was explained in lesson two.
