Blog #24 - Daniel Pustobayev - Period 5 - 3/24/2021 - Day B

 Aim: How do poetic elements create a thematic effect over the course of a poem?


Do now: 

For our do now we had to brainstorm words that we thought of when we heard the word “identity.” Some of the answers that our class said were “name”, “aspirations”, “personality”, and “social security”. Most of these answers were things that regarded what a person acted like and wanted. Some of the answers that were given were things that regarded science or things unique to the person. One of such answers was “dna”. 


After the do now we moved on to definitions of poetic devices. The first poetic devices were musical/sound devices. These convey and reinforce meaning through sound. The two musical devices we did were cacophonous and euphonious. Cacophonous sounds are sounds that produce a harsh sound. Euphonious sounds are sounds that please the ear. We also learned about rhythm, which is the pattern of stressed and unstressed symbols. The last poetic device we learned about was an extended metaphor. An extended metaphor is a metaphor that is developed over several lines or throughout an entire poem. For each of these poetic devices we watched a video in order to go more in depth on them.

This is a video that goes over euphony and cacophony. It defines both words and gives examples of both poetic devices being used in sentences.

This is a video that goes over rhythm. It defines it and shows examples of rhythm in two different poems.

This is a video that goes over extended metaphors. Like the videos before, it defines an extended metaphor and shows examples of it. Unlike them, however, the video also says why authors use extended metaphors.


Extended metaphors:

After watching the videos we moved on to looking at examples of extended metaphors.

Example 1:
As You Like It (By William Shakespeare)

“All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players;

They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts.”

In this metaphor, Shakespeare compares earth to a stage.

Example 2:

Habitation (By Margaret Atwood)

“Marriage is not / a house or even a tent / it is before that, and colder: / the edge of the forest, the edge of the desert / the unpainted stairs  / at the back where we squat  / outside, eating popcorn / the edge of the receding glacier / where painfully and with wonder / at having survived even this far / we are learning to make fire”

In this metaphor, Atwood compares habitation to marriage. More specifically she says that marriage is like an unstable habitation and that it is tough but makes you learn new things.

The next slide tells us why authors use extended metaphors and what its function is. It also includes a poem that is an extended metaphor. 


Theme:

The next slide is dedicated to theme. It defines theme, which is a central idea, point, and underlying meaning of a literary work. It also includes a video that describes what theme is and shows examples of what one might be and what it can’t be. After the theme slide we read the poem Identity by Julio Noboa Polanco. We also annotated the poem and answered questions based on it.

Reflection:

I learned about 5 different poetic devices and how to use them. The most prevalent poetic device, in my opinion, is theme. As a result, knowing how to find themes and understanding what a theme is will likely be useful when reading a piece of literature. The rest of the poetic devices will be useful in my poem project. I learned it in order to ensure that my poem project goes well. These different poetic devices will help me a lot in my poem project.
