Aim: How does Edgar Allan Poe’s, “The Bells” convey and reinforce the meaning of the life cycle through his choice of poetic sound devices?



The Poem of Edgar Allan Poe “Bells”:


  • Different tones used to read it
  • Various meanings
  • Various connotations

Analysis Of Poetry:

Specifically of the poem “Bells:


Sleigh bells, positive connotations. 
-Twinkling of the bells gives off a positive connotation.
-”A world of merriment” happy times, positive.
The effect is supposed to make the poem a delightful tone.

Golden Bells, positive connotations.
-Used for weddings and positive time during the person's life.
-Uses euphonious sounds in order to give the reader a happy thought about the bells.

Brazen Bells, negative connotations.
-give the reader foreshadowing details.
- “They can only shriek,shriek out of tune in a desperate despair.”, gives off  negative connotations.
-The connotations gives the reader a worried and anxious thought.

Iron Bells, negative connotations
-depressing mood that brings the reader into
-”moaning and groaning” negative connotations 
The iron bells give a depressing mood towards the reader.
Team Group Activities

-The first two bells of the passage had positive connotations, yet the ones that followed did not.

Comparing the first two bells to the last two

-The first two bells had positive connotations and gave a happy feel, yet the last two had switched the poems mood to depressed.

Literary devices used to display the sound of the bells.

-Onomatopoeia, Alliteration, Rhyme








Reflection: Today I learned a lot about the poems “Bells” by Edgar Allan Poe and the poetic devices it uses. To find these devices I had to learn to locate the poetic devices. In today's lesson I learned how to do that. I also learned how to break down a poem and look at it in depth in order to find the true meaning of the writer. We used audio to also help find these devices using the tone and voice of the reader to analyze the connotations of the poem.
