Aim: How does "Chapter 7" (of Animal Farm) portray the psychology of memory and authority?

Do Now: THINK/PAIR/SHARE

1. What makes for a good leader?
A good leader has to be able to make decisions well while keeping in mind the people they’re leading, and should be honest too.

2. What qualities or attributes are associated with a good leader?
Some qualities associated with a good leader are decisiveness, honesty, communication, and empathy.

3. Is there a point/degree in which a leader must forge ahead through their vision; despite the cost(s)?
There shouldn’t be a point where a leader must forge through their vision because that’s where they should be leading towards and that would mean giving up on the goal.

4. What cost is too great? How do you know?
The cost is too great when it goes against what you are representing as a leader. If it reaches that point, you’re doing something wrong.

How was memory portrayed in Animal Farm?
  • Memories in Animal Farm were altered by the pigs so that nobody would question the oppressive things that were goin on.
How about authority?
  • Authority was abused in Animal Farm because the leaders exploited the followers to do things for them that led to no benefit for them.
Why were things that happened possible?
  • The things that happened were possible because there was nobody to keep the positions of power in check so they were free to lead however they wanted, even if it didn't do any good for the others.
Can you identify any symbolic connections to Stalin's Five-Year Plan?
  • The windmill is a connection to Stalin's Five-Year Plan because it was meant to modernize the farm, but failed. The modernization shifted to industry and led to lower quality of life.

Write your thoughts regarding the reading.
  • This part of the reading has a lot of deception in it as Napoleon is resorting to lying to the other animals in order to stay in a position of power. He begins spreading lies and blames Snowball for the failures at the farm, which lead to the other animals having a fear of Snowball.
Write about what you learned in your online English lessons.
  • I learned what it means to be a good leader and also that deception can be used to greatly affect people’s mindsets and the way they view something.
What is it like working from home?
  • I have a lot more time to do work because there are 3 days for me to complete the work assigned. In some classes, it’s harder to learn because communication is slower than it is in school.
Reflection
  • I learned that a good leader should stay on the path to their goals and not stray too far from it because then they would not be standing for what they want. I learned it because the characteristics of a leader are important in real life. In the future, our generation will be the leaders and we will have to know how to lead to a better future instead of messing up the world like our current leaders.
