Blogger #22- Derek Nguyen- Period 2-12/16/21

 We went over the questions from 11 Studs JC:III, i (part 2) after

1. Why does Antony shake the hands of the conspirators?

-So he doesn’t get killed by the conspirators.

a. How does this gesture help him win favor with the conspirators? The conspirators do not attack him.

2. Describe Antony’s intentions toward the conspirators at this point. -He plans on doing something destructive towards the conspirators.

a. Will he be friend or foe? How do you know? Examine lines 234-238 and 243-247.

-He will be a foe. He still loves Caesar.

3. Summarize the stipulations that Brutus makes for Antony’s speech. -The stipulations Brutus makes for Antony is to not blame the conspirators for Caesar’s death. 4. Read Antony’s monologue (lines 274-295).

a. Copy and paste the monologue into your English doc, then Paraphrase with your teams after each line of the monologue using the comment feature. -O, pardon me, thou bleeding piece of earth,

That I am meek and gentle with these butchers! 275

Thou art the ruins of the noblest man

That ever lived in the tide of times.

Woe to the hand that shed this costly blood!

Over thy wounds now do I prophesy,--

Which, like dumb mouths, do ope their ruby lips, 280

To beg the voice and utterance of my tongue--

A curse shall light upon the limbs of men;

Domestic fury and fierce civil strife

Shall cumber all the parts of Italy;

Blood and destruction shall be so in use 285

And dreadful objects so familiar

That mothers shall but smile when they behold

Their infants quarter'd with the hands of war;

All pity choked with custom of fell deeds:

And Caesar's spirit, ranging for revenge, 290

With Ate (Greek goddess of ruin, blind folly, delusion, and mischief) by his side come hot from hell, Shall in these confines with a monarch's voice

Cry 'Havoc,' and let slip the dogs of war;

That this foul deed shall smell above the earth

With carrion men, groaning for burial.

Paraphrasing: I'm sorry Earth that I have to forgive the murders. Here is the corpse of the best man ever. The people that stabbed him should be punished and I am cursing these men over Caesar’s dead body. Everywhere in italy there shall be lots of blood and destruction. And Caesar, wanting to get revenge, with the Greek goddess of ruin helping him from Hell, scream Havoc and let war begin. This murder shall be known around the world with corpes wanting to be buried.

b. Characterization: What new qualities in Antony are shown in his monologue? -Antony is two-faced and is vindictive.

c. How does Shakespeare’s use of imagery emphasize Antony’s true intentions toward the conspirators? Provide at least 1 example and explain!

It helps display Antony’s anger toward the conspirators. For example in lines 278-282, “Woe to the hand that shed this costly blood! Over thy wounds now do I prophesy,-- Which, like dumb mouths, do ope their ruby lips, To beg the voice and utterance of my tongue– A curse shall light upon the limbs of men;” In this quote, Antony is angry toward the conspirators for killing Caesar, cursing them.

After we completed answering the questions, we went over the structure of Julius Caesar

Exposition:Act 1 when they are doing a parade; significant anti-Caesar sentiments in Rome Exciting force: The soothsayer remind caesar about the ides march

Rising action:when cassius try to convince Brutusto be in his team, Brutus internal conflict And Brutus decided to kill Caesar and started to plan

Climax: Act 3 - Caesar is stabbed by the conspirators and dies

We concluded our lesson by watching the rest of the video we began watching yesterday.
